History Museum
Celebrates Local Black History February 22
GREENSBORO,
NC (February 14, 2025) Meet some of Greensboro’s African American history
makers from 1-4 pm Saturday, February 22 at the Greensboro History Museum, 130
Summit Ave. Guests can explore Black History with costumed interpreters who
will share well-known and little-known stories of African Americans in the Gate
City.
Interpreters
will portray seven figures, including Revolutionary War Patriot widow Miley
Caper; Benjamin Benson, a free person of color kidnapped into enslavement who
sued for his freedom in Greensboro in 1817; and political pioneer Dr. Katie
Dorsett, the first Black woman to sit on the Greensboro City Council and to
hold a state government cabinet post in North Carolina.
Tours
to visit all of the interpreters begin in the museum lobby approximately every
half hour and take 30-45 minutes. Starting at 12 pm, pre-k to 3rd graders and
their families can learn about Margaret Falkener, the educator who in the 1890s
established the music program at what is today North Carolina A&T State
University, with a fun craft at Little Lions Saturday.
The
Greensboro History Museum, an AAM-accredited Smithsonian Affiliate, is a
division of the City of Greensboro Library Department and operates as a
public-private partnership with the nonprofit GHM Inc. In partnership with the
community, the Greensboro History Museum collects the city's diverse history
and connects people to that history and one another through engaging exhibits,
educational programs and community dialogue. Located in Downtown Greensboro's
Cultural District, the museum is open Tuesdays–Saturdays 10 am to 5 pm and
Sundays 2-5 pm. Admission is free.
