The Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation (PART), City of Winston-Salem, and Winston-Salem Transit Authority (WSTA) have received funding from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to provide commuter options during the Business 40 reconstruction project. During the closure traffic flows will be disrupted as travelers will not be able to use the section of Business 40 between US 52 and Peters Creek Parkway.

The FHWA and NCDOT Business 40 Mitigation funding received by PART and the City of Winston-Salem will be used to enhance bus routes and schedules, refurbish buses, provide subsidized vanpools, and offer transit discounts during the construction.

“Thanks to this grant, commuters will have multiple alternatives for getting to their jobs in downtown Winston-Salem when Business 40 closes,” said Winston-Salem Mayor Allen Joines. “I urge all our downtown workers to look at these options and see what works best for them, both to spare themselves the frustration of dealing with the closure, and to reduce the congestion that the closure will bring.”

“Residents should consider their options for commuting to and from downtown.” Scott Rhine, PART Executive Director “Commuters will have new and improved options to ride transit, vanpool, or carpool. We want commuters to understand whether they ride every day or a couple times a week, they can really make a difference in the congestion relief by using any of these options.”

PART and the City of Winston-Salem are excited to announce these additional programs and services for Triad residents and employees.

“Riding PART saves me money on gas and parking fees in downtown Winston where I work; reduces wear and tear on my car; saves me the hassle of driving on the highway; my employer (Department of Veterans Affairs) supports the use of public transportation and pays for my bus pass. I've been riding Route 1 for two years. Thank you for this service!” - Rachel R, PART Express Rider
